Letter from the CEO

As you may have heard, Picasa, Inc. was recently acquired by Google. This change means we can now offer Picasa 1.6 (the current version of our software) for free. We're thrilled that millions of people will now be able to try both of our revolutionary products - Picasa and Hello.

UIWe believe working with Google will further our goal of helping our users manage their digital photo collections more effectively and efficiently. In the months to come we'll be building on this free offering, and you'll be able to choose from a number of new services and features.

One of the reasons we teamed up with Google is that they share our commitment to always focusing on making our products faster, easier and more fun for our users, so your thoughts are as important to us as ever; if you have comments or questions, check out these Frequently Asked Questions or contact us directly. We enjoy hearing from you.

Google Image Search
Google Image Search

Search Google Images to see how others approach a subject.

It's the most comprehensive image search on the web so you'll likely get a lot of ideas. Then, create your own masterpiece and use Picasa to make the most of the photos in your own collection.

Fall Foliage Digital Photos

The days grow shorter. The autumn light is warmer. It's the time of year to grab your camera and head for those beautifully photogenic hills, small towns and country roads.

Yes, your digital camera will work!
photoYou really can take decent pictures of fall landscapes with a digital camera. Got a tripod? Now's the time to use it to catch longer exposure times. If an image turns out less vibrant than what you saw in person (many digital cameras have a less dynamic color range than film), try the Enhance button in Picasa's edit room to make the lighting and colors pop back to life.

Plan ahead.
If you're traveling to a popular fall-color spot like Vermont or Colorado, plan to stay for several days to increase your odds of capturing peak color. Search Google for "fall foliage report" and you'll find many tourism websites offering advice on when to visit particular spots.

Big vistas and epic grandeur are nice, but don't miss the small scenes.
photoMiles and miles of colored leaves sparkle in the glow of a golden setting sun. Yawn. Taking too many of these grandiose photos can turn into a snooze. And digital cameras can be at their best with scaled-down subjects: a kid raking the yard; carved pumpkins; an old barn framed by colorful trees. Look for unusual perspectives -- shooting straight up a tree trunk, or straight down into a mountain stream. Complementary colors, like yellow leaves against a blue sky, create dramatic contrast in your picture. Get creative! Don't settle for the obvious.

Use rules of composition.
photoA road or fence in the foreground leads the viewer's eye into the picture. The monotony of a plain sky is broken by an overhanging branch from a nearby tree. These tricks give your photos more depth, and depth gives the viewer the feeling of being there, and being able to induce that feeling makes you a better photographer.

Avoid taking pictures at midday under a bright sun.
Morning and afternoon are the best time for fall photography. Be aware of shadows and use your flash to fill in dark, close objects. Take advantage of weather conditions; a drizzly day broken by sunshine can be far lovelier than all sun, all the time. Take what nature gives you and make something beautiful with it.

Go black-and-white.
Want to try an experiment? Use Picasa to see how your color images look in black-and-white. Just hold down these keys: Ctrl +Shift + B. Cool, huh?

My Picasa Story

"Picasa is a brilliant application. I have literally thousands of photographs, artwork and design images stored all over my PC, which I use in my work as a graphic designer and as an artist. Picasa is making it really easy to locate any image I want very quickly, without having to trawl through directories trying to remember where I put it!

Story

"The design of the program; its look and feel, ease of use, and multi-function capabilities (from the simple image editor, which is great for anyone who doesn't want to tackle a full-blown photo editor like Photoshop, to being able to easily create a website gallery of images in a few seconds) is simply amazing, especially as for a free product.

Story

"I'm very pleased that I followed my instinct and downloaded Picasa recently when I saw it linked on Google. Since that day, it has been my preferred image viewer and organizer, and I've already recommended it to several friends. I look forward to future updates! Best wishes to everyone at Picasa!"
